MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - On Wednesday, 15 September, the Mossel Bay branch of the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) celebrated its 21st birthday and on Thursday the celebration took place at the sister branch in George.
The GRSPCA plans to sterilise 2 021 dogs and cats over the next few months.
Apart from the humans enjoying cake and tea, all the residents in the kennels and catteries were treated to special pet biscuits.

It is mind boggling that one female dog and one male dog and their offspring can produce 67 000 puppies in only six years.
And the figures for cats are even more scary: one female cat and one male cat can produce 370 000 cats in seven years.

With this in mind and the fact that unwanted animals are often the victims of abuse and cruelty, the committee of the GRSPCA decided to launch a campaign to sterilise 2 021 animals as part of their birthday celebrations. It costs about R400 to sterilise an animal.
A number of companies as well as individuals and well-known actor, producer and presenter, Hannes van Wyk of Hannes Aan Huis have joined the campaign and according to the GRSPCA chair, Jeanetta Marais, it will be a dream come true – and a better life for animals – if the GRSPCA can achieve this goal.
Many myths regarding the sterilising of an animal exist. However, it is proved that the operation has no effect on the dog or cat and in actual fact it makes the dog more alert and increases his protective instincts as well as minimises sexual and territorial aggression in cats and dogs. Cats become more affectionate and less inclined to wander off their territories. Both dogs and cats are less inclined to urinate or spray in the house and the general activity level of the dogs is lowered.
It also minimises the likelihood of dogs having prostate problems.
