Update
DANA BAY NEWS - The Dana Bay Conservancy, Wildlife Crime Information Network (WCIN), a team from Garden Route SPCA Mossel Bay, Cango Wildlife from Oudtshoorn and several volunteers are conducting a search-and-rescue operation for the wildlife in the green belts affected by the wildfires yesterday, Tuesday, 25 November.
The operation began early this morning already in the burnt areas, and volunteers are urgently needed, said the Dana Bay Wildlife Search and Rescue group.
Volunteers will help with scanning affected areas for injured or distressed wildlife, reporting any sightings and locations and safely transporting animals in need of care.
"No prior experience is required, only a willingness to walk through the burnt terrain, following safety guidelines, and working as part of a coordinated team," said the group.
According to Erika van der Westhuizen of the Dana Bay Conservancy, the next search began at 10:15 this morning.
Volunteers who still want to join the operation can contact Leon Rossouw of the WCIN on 079 240 3491, to find out where they can meet the group.
The group will attempt to cover the entire affected area, says Van der Westhuizen.
It is unclear how long the wildlife search and rescue operation is expected to continue for, as it is dependent on how many volunteers join.
By 07:00 this morning, crews from the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management services were still present on the scene.
"The perimeter is under control with a few hot spots within. The team is monitoring and extinguishing flare-ups as necessary," said Ward 11 cllr, Nickey le Roux.
Flora Road was re-opened for motorists entering and exiting Dana Bay yesterday afternoon.
