MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Animals are very special creatures and they play an important role in our lives.
World Animal Week is celebrated in October. This year the celebrations run from 4 to 10 October to unite the world in thinking, caring and celebrating animals.
Animals are sentient beings and they need to be treated with compassion and respect and their welfare and wellbeing should receive priority. The SPCA movement in South Africa takes this opportunity to reach communities to raise awareness to uplift the welfare of all animals.
There are several ways of getting involved in your local Animal Week festivities.
Furry Friday is on 1 October. This is the ideal opportunity to support the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) by purchasing a pawprint ribbon for R10 and wearing it to show you care about animal welfare.
These will be available at your local SPCA (Mossel Bay: 18 Bill Jeffrey Street, 044 693 0824; George: Ossie Urban Road, George Industrial, 044 878 1990), or you can contact Vanessa Barnard (082 444 3712). There will also be a stall at the Mosselbaai Mall, Heiderand.
Businesses and organisations are challenged to purchase ribbons and to encourage staff to donate a tin or bag of cat or dog food, which will help feed a few furry friends at the local SPCA.
Fun run
On Saturday, 2 October you can enjoy a fun run with Nero, the SPCA mascot. Join him at the Hartenbos Seefront. Entries are from 07:15 – 07:45. Fun run starts at 08:00. Entries are R50 per person and all funds raised will be used for the SPCA's 2 021 Sterilisation project. Call Andelean (064 544 6200) for more details.
On Saturday, 9 October, you can bring your furry friend on a leash to meet all the other doggy friends and take a walk on the beach at 09:30 at the Hartenbos Seefront. From 10:30 there will also be a dog show at the town square at the Seefront. Come and show off your dog in any of the following categories: best trick, most appealing eyes, best puppy under nine months, the dog you would like to take home and so forth. For more details call Vanessa.
You could also donate to the GRSPCA to assist with sterilisations, which is a long-term solution to overpopulation and suffering (Garden Route SPCA, Standard Bank 060 823 216, Branch 050 214).
An urgent plea is made to everyone to report animal cruelty. The public are the eyes and ears of the SPCA (Mossel Bay: 044 693 0824, emergency number: 072 287 1761; George: 044 878 1990, emergency number: 082 378 7384).
Or leave a long-time legacy by including the Garden Route SPCA in your will/testament. Contact Gaby (084 251 0204).
