MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Four people were killed and two almost died in an attempted murder in a horrendous weekend of crime in KwaNonqaba.
This statistic should rather read that five people were killed, considering that the unborn child of one of the victims also died due to the severe attack on the mother.
According to information received from the KwaNonqaba police, three of the four people who died over the weekend succumbed to a single stab wound to the heart.
Two other people were lucky to survive attempts at murder.
In probably the most horrendous murder case, a man was apprehended for the murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend.
It is alleged that on Sunday, 17 December he escorted her from a tavern to their dwelling in Fixaxeni Street in Asla Park, where he assaulted her with a broomstick so severely, that she eventually lost their unborn child.
The attack on the woman only became apparent when friends of her visited the house on Monday and discovered the severely injured woman.
The friends apparently then called the suspect, who returned from work to take the injured woman in a taxi to a nearby hospital.
The victim was then transferred to the George hospital where she died at about 01:30 on Tuesday morning.
The woman managed to make a statement to members of the police before she died.
The suspect has since appeared in court.
Apart from these violent crimes, eight people were arrested by traffic officials in the KwaNonqaba jurisdiction for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, and close to 10 people were arrested on drug-related charges.
In the first incident of the weekend, police responded to a complaint in Sixaxeni Street in Endlovini on 16 December at 06:29.
When they arrived, they found a man lying on his back outside an informal dwelling.
A suspect was arrested for murdering a man known as Winnie Mxuthu by stabbing him once with a sharp object on the right side of the chest.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect and victim were involved in an argument.
The suspect then stabbed the victim only once. The body of the deceased was removed to the mortuary.
At 23:25 on 16 December police were on routine patrols in Frans Street in Asla Park when a victim of a suspected attempted murder was found with multiple stab wounds to his chest, back and an arm.
An 18-year-old suspect was arrested and detained.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The second murder case the KwaNonqaba police attended to occurred on 17 December at about 03:40 in Scholtz Street.
In this case, suspects were arrested after the victim was found with multiple stab wounds and an eyewitness informed the police of the alleged suspects.
The third murder took place in Mawawa Street at 16:32 on 17 December. It is alleged the suspect and victim were arguing about money when, according to a witness, the victim was stabbed in the chest.
In one of the cases of attempted murder, the suspect stabbed a woman in the face, yet walked with her to the KwaNonqaba Police Station on Monday morning to report the incident.
The woman, however, collapsed in the street in front of the police station. The suspect subsequently reported the assault and handed himself over to the police.
The investigating officers are Wo Rudi Swanepoel and Sgt Kekaza.
