MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A Hartenbos man is the new South African weightlifting champion in the below 105kg category.
Ruben Burger (26) represented Western Province in the SA Olympic Weightlifting Senior Championships in Durban on 4 November.
In winning he qualifies for the IWF World Seniors Championships taking place from 28 November to 5 December in the United States.
At beginning of the year, Burger won in the SA Open Championships.
When asked if he had expected to win in Durban, Burger gives an emphatic "yes" and adds: "I had been prepping since the end of last year - two training sessions a day, six days a week, so expected to do well."
Burger was 67kg ahead of the second-placed person in his category. He scored a 282kg total and the runner-up scored 215kg.
Together with Burger, fellow Hartenbos resident Ruan Barnard also competed in the championships in Durban. He missed the podium by only 1kg, coming fourth in his category.
Previously Burger participated in the International Crossfit Open Championships. Crossfit, a test of fitness, consists of a combination of olympic weightlifting, bodyweight movements and gymnastics.
He finished in the top 10 in Africa. There are 17 regions worldwide, one of them being Africa.
Burger and Barnard both train at Eden Fitness/Crossfit Charisma in Hartenbos.
