FRAAIUITSIG NEWS - Reverend Winston Dickerson and his wife, Lorna, of Fraaiuitsig celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, 30 May.

They had a lunch party on the day their anniversary at Café Gannet restaurant in Mossel Bay.

The Dickersons lived in Knysna for 15 years before relocating to Fraaiuitsig in 2022.

Winston was involved in the Knysna community, volunteering his services as a retired Anglican priest, and Lorna helped at the Friday morning knitting and sewing group at Leisure Gardens Senior Citizens' Home for 15 years.

Guesthouse

The Dickersons ran a guesthouse on their property in Rexford, Knysna, called Winlow Lagoon View.

The couple married in the German Lutheran Church in Park Avenue, East London, in the Eastern Cape.

Telling how he met Lorna, Winston explains that she was visiting a friend who was ill.

"I think the friend fancied Lorna," Winston says.

The woman for him

But he decided Lorna was the woman for him, so after only meeting her and chatting to her once, he asked her to "go steady" with him.

Winston had bought her a pearl drop pendant on a gold chain and when Lorna agreed to his request to go steady, he gave her this gift.

Lorna was 21 and Winston 22 when they married. The couple have two children, Brendan in Windhoek and Carmel in Cape Town. Both are married. Winston and Lorna have two granddaughters in Windhoek and one in Cape Town.

'Wonderful neighbours'

"We arrived in Fraaiuitsig on 1 August 2022," Winston says. "We have wonderful neighbours who care for us every day, which we so appreciate.

“We love the view from our deck of the Outeniqua Mountains and the farmlands in the foreground. We are able to see 1 500 cows going to be milked twice a day, and to see the tide coming into the Little Brak River and going out again, all reminding us of the rhythm of life."

He says he and Lorna's lives together and in ministry have been an adventure. The couple moved about 10 times during their marriage, when they were required to relocate to different parishes.

Winston and Lorna Dickerson married in 1964 in East London.
