MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The annual national bowls tournament for visually impaired and disabled athletes officially got underway at the Hartenbos Bowling Club yesterday, on Saturday 11 April.
More than 100 athletes from across South Africa have gathered in the Mossel Bay area to compete in the week-long tournament, which runs from today, Sunday 12 April to 18 April.
Participants will compete across 16 categories.
This year’s tournament carries the theme “Bowls Without Barriers”, highlighting the importance of accessibility and equal opportunity in sport.
The theme highlights the inclusivity of lawn bowls as a sport that accommodates athletes with a wide range of physical and mental abilities, while also showcasing Mossel Bay's commitment to accessible sport and hosting.

Matches will be played at various bowling clubs across the greater Mossel Bay area, including Great Brak Bowling Club, Vista (Little Brak), Hartenbos and Mossel Bay, bringing the competition closer to local communities.
The tournament features a mix of seasoned competitors and newcomers.

Several athletes proudly wear Protea colours and will be aiming to defend their national titles, while others are stepping onto the greens for the first time, hoping to challenge the country’s best.

Councillor Leon van Dyk officially welcomed the athletes to Mossel Bay during the opening ceremony last night, wishing them success and an enjoyable tournament.
