MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay is set to take centre stage in South African disability sport when it hosts a major national lawn bowls tournament from 11 to 18 April, bringing together visually impaired and disabled athletes from across the country.
The annual event will see competitors battle it out in 16 categories to determine the 'Kings and Queens of the Greens', under this year's theme: Bowls Without Barriers.
The theme highlights the inclusivity of lawn bowls as a sport that accommodates athletes with a wide range of physical and mental abilities, while also showcasing Mossel Bay's commitment to accessible sport and hosting.
More than 100 athletes are expected to take part, supported by around 40 directors who assist visually impaired players, along with numerous helpers and supporters.
The week-long tournament will feature both singles and pairs matches, with seasoned competitors, including Protea players, aiming to defend their titles, while newcomers look to make their mark.
Matches will be played across four venues in the greater Mossel Bay area, including Great Brak River Bowling Club, Vista Bowling Club (Little Brak River), Hartenbos Bowling Club and Mossel Bay Bowling Club.
All four clubs have invested significant effort into ensuring their facilities are fully accessible and ready to welcome the influx of players and visitors.
The main hub of the tournament will be Hartenbos Bowling Club, where matches will take place throughout the day for the duration of the event.
The tournament will officially get under way with an opening ceremony at Hartenbos Bowling Club on Saturday at 16:00.
