MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality terminated the services of its chief financial officer, director Marius Botha, following confirmation of the sentences handed down to him in the Williston Regional Court in the Northern Cape last month.
In a statement issued after a special council meeting on Thursday, 7 September, the municipality said the position of chief financial officer would be advertised forthwith and filled in accordance with the relevant legislative prescripts.
On Tuesday, May 23, Botha and his co-accused were found guilty on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering brought against him by the Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality, his previous employer.
Botha was sentenced on 28 August to an effective five years' imprisonment.
The municipality only received confirmation of the sentence on Friday, 1 September.
Acting on the advice received from senior counsel and the municipality's attorneys in this regard, council resolved at a special meeting, held in committee, to terminate Botha's employment in accordance with the contract he entered into when he joined the Mossel Bay Municipality on 1 December 2014.
