Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - As Mossel Bay and the greater Garden Route braces for a continuation of the severe weather experienced since this morning, 11 May, the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services are currently preparing to distribute plastic sheeting to assist residents affected by the adverse weather conditions.
According to the Mossel Bay Municipality, crews are moving through affected areas within Mossel Bay, where the plastic sheets will be handed out to impacted households.
In response to a query sent by Mossel Bay Advertiser this afternoon, the municipality said although it has responded to multiple incidents of damaged infrastructure throughout the day, including the loosening of roofs within informal settlements in Asla Park as a result of the strong wind, no injuries have been reported thus far.
However, all departments within the municipality remain on high alert and are responding to incidents as they emerge.
Earlier this afternoon, the South African Weather Services (Saws) announced a Level 2 warning of a storm surge expected to hit the Western Cape from this evening until Wednesday 13 May, bringing heavy rains, high waves and rising coastal water levels.
Motorists have been advised to reduce their speed, remain alert for obstructions and emergency teams on the roads, avoid unnecessary travel and where possible, to not park any vehicles near or under trees.
The public has been urged to stay indoors where possible, avoid power lines and unstable structures, and to immediately report any emergencies directly to the municipality's Joint Operations Centre on 044 606 5121.
For non-emergency matters, members of the public should contact the Municipal Switchboard on 044 606 5000.
Further updates will be issued by the Mossel Bay Municipality as the conditions change.
