MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A fisherman drowned at Second Beach, Dana Bay, outside Mossel Bay, today at about 12:30.
Two fishermen were in difficulty. One could be rescued, but the other was declared deceased on the scene after extensive attempts to resuscitate him, a reliable source told Mossel Bay Advertiser.
It should be noted that Dana Bay beaches were not manned by lifeguards and were regarded as dangerous, not swimming beaches, the source said. He said people should not swim there and that fishermen should be cautious there.
One person drowned
Some posts on Facebook sites claimed that two fishermen drowned, but one person drowned, Mossel Bay Advertiser can confirm.
Off-duty lifeguards, who happened to be on the beach at the time, were on hand to help at the time.
NSRI
Mossel Bay Advertiser has enquired to the NSRI, which will be providing a statement tomorrow morning, it is expected. The name of the man who drowned cannot be given at this stage because his next of kin have not all been informed of his death yet.
The wife of the man who drowned was on the beach at the time.
Besides the off-duty lifeguards, the NSRI, Western Cape Emergency Medical Services, the police and also Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Management Services were all at the scene to assist.
