MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay community is invited to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to join knitted and crocheted squares to create blankets in celebration of Mandela Day on Saturday 18 July.
Several squares have been created since 2025, when the project was initialised by the Mossel Bay Rotary Club, in collaboration with the Goue Sleutel ATKV Youth branch of Garden Route High School and the Langsous ATKV branch.
Members of these three groups came together and were taught how to knit and crochet, as well as how to join the crafted squares into blankets, which will later be donated to under-privileged individuals and organisations.
The project is also aimed at empowering both the youth and adults with knitting and crocheting skills, in an effort to alleviate unemployment and poverty, and build self-esteem.
The Mossel Bay community is invited to gather at Garden Route High from 09:00 on Mandela Day to create their own squares or help join completed squares into blankets.
Knitting and crocheting needles, as well as wool, will be provided to new members on the day. Current members are requested to bring along their own knitting and crocheting needles.
