MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Concerned members of the community last week sent a message on one of the Mossel Bay Advertiser's social media platforms, saying vendors at spaza shops are allegedly overcharging for electricity and other essentials goods.
The Advertiser made an enquiry to the municipality on the issue.
The municipality confirmed that consumers cannot be charged a higher tariff for electricity than the tariffs approved by Nersa and the municipality.
"It is illegal for vendors to levy any surcharges or service charges for the sale of electricity.
"This should be immediately addressed by Messrs Utility World, responsible for revenue management and vending within the Mossel Bay electricity licensed area," said Nickey le Roux, municipal spokesperson.
Mossel Bay Municipality advises the community to report the specific vendors by calling 044 606 5000 or sending an email to admin@mosselbay.gov.za.
"The vendor's conduct will immediately be investigated. There is a process in place regarding investigations such as this. The municipality calls on vendors to act honourably and with integrity, especially at this time."
