MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Milkwood Primary School’s Conlan Duthie has done it again!

Conlan competed in the Eden Open Chess Tournament held at Albertinia High School on Saturday 19 September, where he placed first in the U12 boys’ category.

The school said in a Facebook post that following his victory, he was selected to represent the region at the Mzansi Youth Chess Championship 2026 from 13 to 19 December.

The championship will be held at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein.

According to Mzansi Youth Chess Championship’s website, this tournament, organised by Free State Chess with the support of Chess South Africa, brings the country’s most promising young chess players together.

“The championship will feature age-group categories from U8 to adults, with open and ladies sections in all categories, providing equal opportunities for players to compete, excel, and pursue national honours,” read the information on the website.

Milkwood says Conlan’s selection was based solely on merit points he had accumulated against other players in his age category across the country. 

This is a fantastic achievement for the young learner and the school is extremely proud of him.
