MOSSELBAAI NUUS - The Dana Bay Conservancy has a mesmerising view of the Indian Ocean and includes a green belt which provides shelter for some of nature's finest animals and plant life. Locals believe everyone living in Dana Bay should be proud to call it home.
The conservancy's committee has a passion for the prevalent fauna and flora and wants residents to take ownership to preserve it.
"If a strong bond is formed between residents and our environment we can ensure that our conservancy will outlast our grandchildren," says one of the conservancy's committee members, Dean Espach.
"The question, however, is: how do we ensure sufficient awareness to entice people to be equally passionate about the environment we treasure?"
Chris Hazer, another committee member, says, "What we are doing to the conservancy is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another."
Projects
Creating awareness of both the existence of the conservancy and the local conservation-worthy environment is the first priority. By creating awareness, respect for the conservancy and Dana Bay can be ensured.
"We want the awareness to be so encompassing that everyone entering Dana Bay will know about the conservancy. Beautiful bumper stickers have been produced for all Dana Bay residents to display on their vehicles, thus creating awareness across the Garden Route. The information board at the OK Grocer Dana Bay received a make-over to provide the community with valuable information on local fauna and flora," says Espach.
Projects
A signboard is planned for the entrance of Dana Bay. The conservancy has acquired a 2,8m by 1,8m frame and work on the design has started, soon to be followed by a meeting of the committee to determine where the sign should be placed, taking into consideration local by-laws.
Dana Bay Conservancy asked for the Dana Bay signboard on Louis Fourie Road at the entrance to Dana Bay to be replaced. A further project is to ensure that residents know the exact locations of the various green belt areas in the neighbourhood.
In due course the committee members will be introduced to residents. Residents are urged to become involved with any of the many projects to conserve the environment. A lot of work is being done to better communication channels with residents.
