MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Joshua le Roux (8) has been diagnosed with cancer for the third time in his young life.
First it was a tumour on his kidney in 2023, then it was his left lung in 2024, and now, in May this year, it was in his right lung.
He attends school at Lighthouse Academy in Mossel Bay. At the moment, he is in the Rondebosch Medical Centre Private Hospital in Cape Town, his mum, Karla Lawrence, confirmed.
She finds it incredibly emotional to speak about her young boy’s battle with cancer. “It feels like, once again, we just got back to normal. He has just finished with chemo and was just getting his little body moving and learning to be a boy, and we get stopped in our tracks.”
The first diagnosis back in 2023 came after he had complained about back and tummy pain that just kept getting worse. Off to the paediatrician they went, just to return home with the heartbreaking news. “Joshua was very sick. I knew something was wrong, but never thought he was that sick.”
The tumour was removed, he had chemo, and everything went as well as it could, Karla said.
The second time around, Joshua went for a check-up scan. He was just getting to restart his life, going to school, growing hair, when he had to start harsh chemo and radiation again - and once again came out clean on the other side.

“This time, he was complaining about back pain and stomach pain one Sunday. That Wednesday, we went for testing, just to make sure, as he still did not complain much. The doctor told us the news, and we got in the car and drove to Cape Town.
“We pray for a miracle, that the Father will heal his lungs. We prefer not to use the c-word all the time - we speak life!” said Karla.
Well-known humanitarian Burre Burger took to his Facebook page to ask for prayers when the news about young Joshua’s third diagnosis came. “May I ask you to please go on your knees and pray for Joshua’s healing - for a miracle, for deliverance from cancer?”
