MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Delivering on his promise made during a recent visit, the Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works, Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela was yesterday dubbed the 'Minister of Keeping his Promises' by the leaders of the local taxi associations in Mossel Bay.
The minister and a team from his office visited Mossel Bay to follow up on discussions he had with taxi industry leaders last month. Yesterday he provided feedback on the concerns raised by the roleplayers.
Minister Madikizela praised the Mossel Bay Municipality for their leadership and for being the only municipality in the Western Cape that initiated a well functioning Taxi Liaison Committee. He asked that his office ensure that the initiative is duplicated in all local authorities in the Western Cape.
Minister Madikizela welcomed the effective negotiations and continuous liaison between the municipality and the taxi associations, saying that the good relations are commendable.
Mossel Bay Municipality is the first local government to establish a mayoral committee for protection services, and the minister congratulated the executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal on the initiative that will formally be launched next week.
The Executive Mayor of the Garden Route District Municipality, Councillor Memory Booysen added that Mossel Bay Municipality was indeed pioneers with the establishment of the new mayoral committee, "Mossel Bay will disrupt the criminality on the N2 and become the hub for safety and security in the district. I congratulate Mossel Bay Municipality on taking the lead to establish effective relations with local stakeholders and roleplayers such as the taxi industry effectively and sustainably. "
The taxi industry leaders received feedback on concerns they raised, such as the need for taxi ranks at the local shopping malls that will allow the industry to improve their service delivery to their clients. The leaders thanked the municipality for the Taxi Liaison Committee. They said it is an effective platform where problems may be raised while acknowledging that not all problems can be solved at a local municipal level.
The municipality invited the taxi associations to also join the community meetings on the Integrated Development Plan as this is the opportunity for the community to discuss their needs.
