MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A Brandwag man (21) who pleaded guilty to three counts of raping young children between 2018 and 2024 will effectively spend the next 15 years behind bars.
The sentencing, which was handed down by the Mossel Bay Regional Court on Tuesday 22 July, was held in camera, meaning it was not open to the media or the public, due to the man being a minor when he committed the first rape in 2018. He therefore cannot be named.
In 2018, when he was 14, he raped a nine-year-old girl. In September last year, he raped two boys, a six-year-old and a nine-year-old, in two separate incidents. He pleaded guilty on 14 May.
On Tuesday, he was sentenced to five years, suspended for five years, for the rape of the nine-year-old girl. He was sentenced to 15 years for the rape of the six-year-old and a further 15 years for the rape of the nine-year-old.
These sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will spend 15 years in prison.
The family of one of the victims, who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, told Mossel Bay Advertiser they were satisfied with the sentence and felt justice had been served.
The sentence came following the work of the regional court prosecutor Helga Goosen, and the two investigating officers on the case, sergeants Mantshadi Mofokeng and Ntandazo Magoqwana of the police's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Mossel Bay.
