Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The man who survived a gunshot in the face while his friend was killed by a shot in the chest in Adriaans Avenue, Asla Park, on 18 October, said he feels lucky to be alive.
The man (35), who has asked not to be named for fear of his safety, said he had been watching soccer with several friends the night he was shot and his new friend, Vuyisile Makhasi (35), died.
He said Makhasi had only been in Mossel Bay for a short time, having moved from Gauteng three weeks before.
The man told Mossel Bay Advertiser Makhasi had been sweeping near the front door when several shots suddenly rang out. He said he saw Makhasi fall to the floor.
"I knew I had been injured, because I was bleeding from my face, but I didn't know at that stage how I had been hurt," he said.
Makhasi was on the floor with the gunshot wound to his chest, still alive. The man and a few other friends rushed Makhasi to hospital, where he was later declared dead.
"It was only when I was in the hospital that I found out I had been shot in the face," he said.
It is understood that the bullet had entered through his right nostril and exited through his left cheek.
"The doctor told me there was not too much damage. The pain has lessened since the week after the shooting. I have nightmares from the shooting," he said.
He added that he strongly believes the investigating officer has a strong handle on the case.
Makhasi's family was contacted for comment, but no response had been received by the time of going to press.
The KwaNonqaba Police Station's spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, previously told Mossel Bay Advertiser that a case of murder and attempted murder is under investigation under Detective Sergeant José Cunha.
