MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Four girls from the Mossel Bay area are part of two rugby A groups, from which a selection will be made for the South Western District (SWD) U18 and U16 girls' rugby squads.
The three U18 girls played in Albertinia last week, at a regional rugby festival for girls.
They were invited as part of the George regional team, says SA Rugby's Samuel Oktober, who is head coach at the Youth Training Centre (YTC) at SWD Rugby in George.
Oktober said: "The festival in Albertinia was a platform for talent identification for the coaches. The George regional team played against the Hessequa regional team."
The scores were:
George Regional U16: 65, Hessequa U16: 0 and George Regional U18: 75 and Hessequa U18: 5.
Training
SWD Rugby community coach Stanley Kama, based in Mossel Bay, together with other coaches, has been training schoolgirls during sessions held at the Hillcrest Secon-dary School grounds.
The girls will play a friendly match next week.
The girls in the U18 A Group are Linothando Hlekiso and Lathitha Ntshwanti from Hillcrest Secondary School and Akeelah Mei from Great Brak River Secondary.
A girl from Point High School, Elizka le Grange, was selected for the U16 A group.
The A groups were selected from trials held on 2 May in George.
Oktober said: "We are still training and preparing the girls. The next training session will take place on 7 June."
Selected
The two SWD U16 and U18 squads of 23 players each will be selected from the two A groups, which each comprise 30 players.
Oktober, who works in conjunction with SWD Rugby, says SWD and SA Rugby are "still busy in Mossel Bay, getting high schools to be fully involved in girls' rugby".
"An interprovincial friendly match is planned and we will have a date for it soon," says Oktober.
The squads of 23 players will play at SA Rugby's National Youth Week at Jeppe High School in Johannesburg from 30 June to 4 July.
