MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Marlin Lifesaving Club of Mossel Bay competed in the 2025 DHL National Surf Championships in Gqeberha from 28 April to 3 May and its athletes excelled against much larger and better-funded clubs.
This was a club championship, unlike a contest in which the regions compete against one another.

A strong team of nippers, junior lifeguards and seniors from Marlin participated in various surf and beach events. events.
While the larger clubs traditionally dominate the rankings, Marlin’s athletes refused to be overshadowed, Marlin noted in a media release.
The team finished 13th out of 23 clubs nationally and claimed first place among the clubs in the Eden region.
The nippers shone brightly, finishing 11th overall, and took second place in Eden, just behind Plett Lifesaving.
The Marlin U10 mixed beach relay team (Cass-Lynn Botha, Keanu Hermanus, Lamar Fillies and Israel Karelse) earned a silver medal, and the U14 team (Kwezi Mini, Damon Busa, Jowin Meyer and Trenesh Agulhas) a bronze.

Southern Cross
Mossel Bay's Southern Cross Lifesaving Club also competed in the championships with a team of six nippers and six juniors.
Nipper results:
Zach Manie became the national champion by winning a gold medal in the U11 Boys' Beach Sprints.
Junior results:
Quewin Pieterse became the National Champion by winning U17 Male Beach Flags. He also received a bronze medal for the U17 Male Beach Sprints.
Quewin has just been selected for the Lifesaving South Africa High Performance Team for the coming 2025/26 season.
Kodiane Minnie did well in the swim events by coming seventh in the Run Swim Run and eighth in the Surf Swim.
