MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The SWD Women's cricket team got their 2017/18 campaign off to a perfect start when they defeated Eastern Province by three wickets in their season opener at the Bridgton Sports Grounds in Oudtshoorn on Saturday.
SWD reached the winning target - a new SWD record for the highest successful run chase - with six balls to spare.
EP, who batted first, were restricted to only 29/1 after 15 overs, but a partnership of 115 between Lanette Pienaar (50) and Jana Nell (98* from only 71 balls; 3x6, 8x4) enabled the visitors to post a competitive 221/7.
Micaela Andrews (3/39 in 10 overs) was the SWD bowling hero. Andrews (41; 48 balls, 5x4) and the skipper, Haroline Rhodes, with an unbeaten 53* (47 balls, 5x4), paved the way for a momentous victory.
SWD held their nerves and showed great composure as they scored 88 runs in their last 10 overs. Nell (2/28 in 10 overs) was also EP's best bowler.
Twenty20 match
In the Twenty20 match on Sunday Jana Nell (58* from 30 balls; 3x6, 5x4), who was dropped with her score on 10, played a match-winning innings to secure a seven-wicket victory for the visitors.
Nell and Anneke Kapp (27*) put together an unbeaten partnership of 70 runs for the fourth wicket. SWD, who batted first, posted 124/6, thanks to a magnificent contribution with the bat by Micaela Andrews (57; 36 balls, 1x6, 9x4) and a well-played 34* (29 balls, 4x4) by Haroline Rhodes. EP reached the target 126/3 with one over to spare.
