MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Local cricketer Tiché Frans (15), who attends Sao Bras High School, had the prestigious experience of attending a national training camp for U19s, which took place last weekend.
Tiché was scouted for the camp in December 2024, when she attended an U16 National Week, where she represented the Garden Route Badgers.
She was the only player from the Garden Route invited to the training camp last weekend.
At her young age, Tiché played for the Badgers Women during the 2023/24 season.
Tiché plays for the D'Almeida Hub girls' team in Mossel Bay and for both the ladies' and men's teams of Mossel Bay's Sussex Cricket Club, based at D'Almeida Park.
The camp over the past weekend was one of two being held by Cricket South Africa (CSA) in the preparation of the South Africa U19 Women’s team for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027 in Bangladesh and Nepal.
Centre of Excellence
It took place from 20 to 23 March at the CSA Centre of Excellence in Tshwane.
A total of 24 players attended this first camp.
As part of a broader vision to build a strong foundation for the next World Cup cycle, CSA selected 50 players through its Talent Acceleration Programme (TAP), following an extensive scouting effort during the National Weeks at the end of 2024.
CSA Girls’ U19 and National Academy head coach Dinesha Devnarain highlighted the thorough selection process undertaken to “cast the net wide and ensure no stone is left unturned in unearthing talent across the country”.
She said: “TAP leaders and the selectors went to the U13 Regional Week, U16 National Week and the U19 National Week and that's how we got to the 50 identified players.
“We are also looking to do a roadshow around the country to see that we've touched every avenue and we're not missing any talent that's out there."
Last weekend's training camp focused on skills development and match practice, with a specific emphasis on fitness, a key focus point for Devnarain.
