LOCAL TRAVEL REVIEW - Sharlee Moriarty, Group Editors Strategic Marketing Manager, tells us about her experience:
There was a time in my life where I had a fully equipped camping kit, with all sorts of fancy outdoor do-hickeys, that stood ready for action for all my spur of the moment camping adventures. These days I find my ready-to-go kit replaced by nappy changing and bottle preparation essentials ready for outings that compliment naptime schedules, haha.
I do love an outdoorsy adventure though and am thrilled that I have little companions to share all of life’s adventures with. I am even more thrilled when those adventures can cater to all of their needs. Glamping excites me because its all of the excitement and charm of camping, but with all of the essentials for a just-like-home time away from home.
To see if AfriCamps at Oakhurst’s glamping tents were fit for hassle-free family adventures, I decided to spend the night there with my kids (on my own). I truly had the most incredible time. So much so that I am currently planning a trip with the whole family for a nice long getaway.

Overlooking rolling green fields and the picturesque Outeniqua Mountains are 8 beautiful canvas tents that sleep up to 5 people with 2 queen size beds and a single bunk bed. The tents are fully equipped with everything you need, including aircon for hot summer days and electric blankets and fireplaces for those chilly winter nights.
We arrived on a day that was an absolute scorcher and I cannot tell you how happy I was walking into the tent to find the aircon. It not only saved us from literally melting but also a total baby melt-down catastrophe. True to most teenagers style, the 1st questions my son asked me as we walked in was ,“What’s the wifi password?” and while I held my breath anticipating there might be none so far out, I noticed that they didn’t only have wifi, but a pretty decent connection at that. Not that we even needed it though! As soon as we were out the door to go exploring, any thought of device time completely faded into the wilderness.
Our 1st stop was the playground. A lovely well-kept shaded area equipped with jungle gym, sandpit, and ball games. The little one was ever so pleased, while the rest of us were just happy to rest under some shade in a wispy breeze. That was until we heard about e-Rides by AfriCamps, brand new rental e-bikes at the camp. Cue the baby-sitter, and my son and I were off on some zippy mountain biking adventures. It was a ridiculous amount of fun! I must have giggled like a school girl. LOL.
After working up a thirst, it was time for some refreshments and the swimming pool, which began our water-filled fun. The pool was a lovely cool temperature surrounded by stunning views, which would have made it very difficult to retreat from, had we not had a hot tub to retreat to. All I am going to say about the hot-tub though, is, I need one of those in my life!
As the temperature cooled and the sun began to set, it was time for dinner, which naturally was a braai considering the occasion, and the tent had every little bit and bob that we needed to make the dad-less braai pretty seemless. We all sat and watched the sunset while telling stories amongst views that were absolutely breathtaking until it was time for us to all tuck into our cabin where we all slept comfortable and peacefully until morning.
IN CONCLUSION:
If you are a family looking for an affordable outdoorsy adventure, AfriCamps at Oakhurst definitely ranks as one of the top local Glamping accommodation spots in the Garden Route. It is not only great value for money but a really comfortable stay packed with fun-for-the-whole-family activities.
