The advocate was speaking outside her voting station in Lynnwood Ridge, Pretoria, moments after casting her ballot.
Madonsela says the struggle by many people for the right to vote should never be forgotten.
"It’s just a reminder that it took a lot of work and a lot of sacrifices for every South African to be able to be able to vote. It is an important thing for us to do, it is not just a civic duty but an opportunity to shape our democracy every step of the way."
She has urged South Africans who are considering not voting not to waste their voice because every single vote counts.
