NATIONAL NEWS - New figures released this week show that bank clients have lost around R21 million to crime in the first half of this year.
The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) says 700 incidents in which people were robbed after withdrawing cash from ATMs were reported this year.
These types of incidents increased by 4% between 2015 and 2016; Sabric says most of the incidents being reported in Gauteng followed by Kwazulu-Natal.
According to the institution, the perpetrators position spotters at ATMs or banks to identify possible victims who make cash withdrawals.
Then the thieves usually strike after following a person to their work or home.
Sabric says it's concerned about the number of times these crimes have led to the murder of banking clients.
