The stadium roared with locals shouting ‘Phansi Xenophobia Phansi,’ and called for an end to the violence. Local dignitaries and celebrities came to the stadium to show their support for unity. Speakers from the different faiths addressed the crowd. There was a strong police presence to ensure that the proceedings ran smoothly.
The march started from Curries Fountain and ended at Durban City Hall where the massive crowd had gathered. Leading the march was the first lady Thobeka Zuma, KZN premier, Senzo Mchunu, ANC treasurer, Dr Zweli Mkhize, Human Settlements MEC, Ravi Pillay, eThekwini speaker, Logie Naidoo and KZN Safety MEC, Willies Mchunu. However, despite the stern warning from police, who stated that anyone planning to disrupt the peaceful march against xenophobia would be dealt with, there was a clash between some locals and police officers.
