GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Waves of up to four metres were crashing to shore at Victoria Bay early this morning, Friday 27 May, where the first contestants in the annual Vic Bay Quad will take to the water at 12:00.
Teams from five districts - Nelson Mandela Bay, Cape Town, Cape Winelands, Eden and Buffalo City - are at Vic Bay for this second biggest contest in South Africa, held by Surfing South Africa.
Eden Surfriders chairman Robert Pollock says the Eden team consists of strong surfers and he is upbeat about their chances to step out as winners again like they did last year. The team has had some gruelling training from local veteran Leonard Giles.
Pollock invites all Garden Route locals to Vic Bay for some spectacular surfing action. The high swell is expected to back off through the weekend. "It looks like tomorrow we'll be having some fantastic surf so we expect to have a really good contest."
The participating districts' top surfers were selected during trials held in the months leading up to the Quad. Contestants enter in the age categories Over 60, Over 50, Over 45, Over 40 and Over 30, as well as Open Women and Open Men.
