MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Scores of workers from Siyakhona Scaffolding (Pty) Ltd have again downed tools and gathered on an open area adjacent to the KwaNonqaba Police Station in a peaceful protest.
The protest has been ongoing for the past three weeks as workers are awaiting feedback on their demand to be directly employed by PetroSA. Siyakhona Scaffolding has a longstanding contract with PetroSA to supply and erect scaffolding.
In October 2018 the workers also protested as they demanded their wage increase should be adjusted by at least 2.3% to 7%. An increase of 2.3%, the least the workers were willing to settle for, translated to R5 per hour.
The workers were promised an answer to their demands by today, Friday 22 February. When speaking to the Mossel Bay Advertiser this week, they remained hopeful of a positive outcome.
They believe cognisance should be taken of the harsh conditions and requirements set for their semi-skilled to skilled labour involved in erecting and providing scaffolding on site at PetroSA, and that PetroSA should, therefore, employ the workers directly.
