MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A 58-year-old man was robbed of his cellphone, cash and cigarettes while walking to work along Louis Fourie in Heiderand on Saturday, 18 January, and two suspects were arrested shortly afterwards and the victim's possessions returned.
This is thanks to a team of officers from Mossel Bay Police Station.
The victim had been walking down the road near the Provincial Traffic Department in Heiderand just before 06:00, when two men approached him and allegedly forcefully took his cellphone, some cash and a packet of cigarettes, before fleeing the area.
A few minutes after the robbery, Sergeant Malusi Matiya was on his way to work when several people, gathered near the department, indicated he should stop his vehicle.
Matiya stopped, heard that a man had been robbed and called for back-up from sergeants Ricardo Gelderbloem and Pieter Coetzer and Constable Xolile Speelman.
Upon the team's arrival, they were given a description of the clothing worn by the suspects and immediately the officers began a search.
They soon came across the two suspects in Fourie Road at the traffic lights leading to the Garden Route Casino.
One of the suspects was arrested and the second fled on foot, jumping over a fence and running to Highway Park. Police gave chase in their vehicle and arrested him.
The two were allegedly found in possession of the stolen items, which were returned to the victim. A case of common robbery was opened at the Mossel Bay Police Station.
