GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality’s Mayor Andrew Stroebel has announced his resignation, effective 31 October, marking the end of a long political career with the DA.
In his resignation letter, Stroebel said it had been an honour and a privilege to serve since joining the DA in 2009, and that he was proud of the work he had accomplished during his time in leadership roles.
Stroebel confirmed he has already notified both the municipal manager and the speaker’s office.
The DA acknowledged his decision, noting his contributions over the years. “Andrew has served his community with dignity since joining the party in 2009.
"He was elected as Ward 7 Hessequa’s councillor in 2011, then as Speaker of Council in 2016, and in June last year, as Executive Mayor of the Garden Route Municipality.”
Despite his relatively short tenure as mayor, Stroebel leaves behind a legacy of notable achievements, including securing a clean audit from the Auditor-General and strengthening partnerships between tourism and business sectors.
The DA’s provincial leader, Tertuis Simmers, and East Region Chairperson, Venolea Fortuin, thanked him for “amplifying the true values of the party” and confirmed that while he was stepping down as a public representative, Stroebel would remain a loyal party member.
“We wish Andrew the best of luck as he opens a new chapter in his life.”
