MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Local boy, Rylan Lemmetuis (13), had an amazing haul of gold and silver medals - 10 in total - at the South African Championships of Performing Arts (SACOPA).
Besides this, he won two overall trophy awards: for male vocal and male acting for age group, 13 to 15.
And to top those two accolades, Rylan was voted the vocal category grand champion at SACOPA.
He participated in four different genres, with 11 items at the SACOPA 2024 Nationals held in Rustenburg from 21 to 28 September.
The four genres were acting, modelling, vocal with self-accompaniment (piano) and vocal.
Acting
To win his gold medal in the Acting Broadway Musical Theatre category, Rylan played Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Rylan played the piano and sang Lady Gaga's Always Remember Us This Way to win his gold medal in the category, Vocal Self-Accompaniment.
He said: "I got gold even though it was my first year, playing and singing. I take piano lessons."
With his rendition of My Way by Frank Sinatra, he won a gold medal for Vocal Contemporary. In the Vocal Open category he won gold with his performance of Defying Gravity from The Wicked musical. Pop To win his Vocal Pop gold medal, Rylan sang Bruno Mars' Die with a smile.
Vocal Rock category
Clinching the Vocal Rock gold medal, he sang Queen's The show must go on.
The top achievers in SACOPA are chosen to perform in the "showcase" after the contest - the gala show - and for that Rylan performed Frank Sinatra's My way.

Rylan said: "The experience was really fun and I learnt new things. Friends "It was fun seeing friends who also went to Los Angeles for the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) and who participated in SACOPA again.
Voice coach
"I had lots of vocal lessons." Rylan's singing coach lives in Jeffreys Bay and he does vocal training with him on video WhatsApps on Tuesdays.
He hopes to compete in WCOPA again next year, depending on funds.
He competed in the competition in June this year and was in the top five in his category and chosen to perform in the showcase at the end.
Next year he wants to be first in his category. If you would like to support Rylan in his quest to compete at WCOPA, call his mother, Nadia (073 546 6321).
