MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Four Grade 12 learners at Point High School in Mossel Bay did a special, impromptu dance performance, which was filmed.
Little did they know, the recorded performance would soon garner more than 20 000 likes and more than 1000 comments on TikTok.
It was uploaded by a classmate.
Ahlume Vanqa, Mandisi James, Junior Pikinini and Raywin Cameron did not expect the video to go viral. "We were just doing something fun in our class," said Ahlume.
On Thursday, 27 February, the boys were in their Maths Literacy class. In this particular classroom, the learners and their teacher, Nerina Schoeman, often share music recommendations.
"They'll show me what they're listening to and what they enjoy, such as an amapiano song, and then I'll show them some of my favourites. It's how we connect," said Schoeman.
That Thursday, the boys had just showed Schoeman an amapiano song they loved. As the tradition goes, she then played one of her favourite songs, Lekker Ou Jan by Klipwerf Orkes for the class.
Schoeman's birthday happened to fall on that day. As a sweet birthday dedication, the boys broke out into an unprepared dance. Although the song is not what they would typically listen to, "anything for our teacher", they said.
The boys said they've looked at the comments on the video on TikTok, and found most of them pleasant. "Some were off," joked Raywin.
When asked if they would do something like this again for their teacher's next birthday, the boys said that although they'd be out of school by then, they would gladly return.
"I'll hold you accountable to that," joked Schoeman.
