MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Nurses from Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital celebrated International Nurses' Day with two different functions last week.
The functions were held on the nurses' off days, on Monday and Wednesday, so operations at the hospital were not affected.
Some of the nurses attended the Monday function and the others, the Wednesday one.
The nurses paid for the functions themselves through fundraising braais they have held.
On Monday and Wednesday, the Nurses' Day celebrations started with the reading of the Nurses' Pledge.
After that the nursing staff enjoyed a buffet breakfast at a restaurant at The Point.
International Nurses' Day is celebrated on 12 May each year.
This year's theme was "Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies."
Mossel Bay Advertiser attended the function at the restaurant on Wednesday, 14 May, where there was a relaxed, festive atmosphere, as the staff enjoyed a buffet breakfast with a wide variety of fare.
The nurses, all looking extremely neat and tidy in white and navy blue, chatted and took photographs of themselves.
It was a beautiful day and they enjoyed the fine, sunny weather, with the restaurant being right on the beach.
Nursing manager Jabulisile Mahlangu gave a speech at the breakfast, thanking the nurses for their hard work and commitment. See a video below.
She said nursing is "waking up early, staying up late and still finding the strength to smile, to listen, to care".
Mahlangu said: "Thank you for your skill, your sacrifices and your heart. You are the backbone of healthcare, the unsung heroes of healing and the reason so many lives are touched, uplifted and saved." She stressed the importance of unity among the personnel.
She quoted Bible scriptures and emphasised the importance of prayer. See the rest of her speech at the end of the photos below.
Provincial Hospital medical manager Dr Jaco Botma also attended the event and gave a short address, encouraging the personnel.
