MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Four of Mossel Bay’s firefighters, Nadia Jacobus-Julies, Jayde Viljoen, Siphokazi Yabo and Ziphelele Magaqa, brought home gold after competing in the annual Toughest Firefighter Alive competition in George from Thursday to Saturday, 1 to 3 October.
These ladies proudly represented Mossel Bay and were among 330 firefighters competing at the Garden Route Mall over the weekend, proving they could hold their own over the strenuous three-day competition.
Teams completed many gruelling tests in each of the competition’s four stages, designed to replicate the physical and practical demands firefighters face during emergencies.
Each stage certainly tested the firefighters’ strength, endurance and rescue skills, with challenges including an 80m hose run, a double hose roll-up, striking a large steel block with a hefty sledgehammer, pushing two 25L foam drums, and a manikin rescue, among others.
