MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A K9 Langeberg Unit officer from Mossel Bay has been arrested on a charge of possession of explosives.
The spokesperson of the Western Cape Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Unit (Hawks) Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani said the arrest of the sergeant was made on 8 October by the Serious Organised Crime Unit based in George.
Hani said the arrest stems from an incident on 13 February 2022, when an officer from the Mossel Bay Explosives Unit was contacted by the sergeant from the K9 Langeberg Unit.
"The sergeant of the K9 unit informed the sergeant of the explosive unit of an operation scheduled for 14 February 2022, to recover a suspected M26 hand grenade," said Hani.
"On the day of the operation, the explosives unit was called to a scene next to the N2 highway near KwaNonqaba to examine the device. It was confirmed to be an M26 hand grenade."
Hani said that investigations into the incident found that the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) was not called to the scene and no arrest was made for possession of the grenade.
Further investigation revealed that an arrest had indeed been made on 14 February that year, however, the matter was not enrolled in court, said Hani.
"Subsequent inquiries identified the suspect, alleged to have been arrested (for possession of the grenade) to be a registered informer. A warrant of arrest was executed at K9 Langeberg Mossel Bay which led to the arrest of the official," said Hani.
The sergeant is expected to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court today, 9 October.
