MOSSEL BAY NEWS - This Sunday, 16 November, will see over 2 500 athletes from across the country and the globe flock to Mossel Bay's Santos Beach for the start of the fourth Isuzu Ironman 70.3.
The first leg of the triathlon is a 1.9km swim, starting at Santos Beach at 06:45. According to the race schedule, the first athlete is expected to finish the swim at 07:10, before moving on to the second leg of the race: a 90km cycle.
The race schedule predicts that the first athlete will complete the cycle at about 09:30. The final stretch of the triathlon is the 21.1km run.
The winner is expected to cross the finish line just before 11:00. However, the triathlon will officially end at 16:00 on Sunday.
Several road closures and beach access restrictions have been put in place for the upcoming race. They are as follows:
Santos Beach to De Bakke Beach
No swimming or surfing will be allowed from sunrise until 09:00 on Sunday 16 November.
Road closures and lane restrictions
• The R327 (N2 to 5km before Herberts-dale) will be closed from 06:30 to 12:30. Detour routes are available via Albertinia and Kleinberg (west) and Brandwag and Hartebeestkuil Dam (east).
• The N2 (Louis Fourie Road to the R327 intersection) will have lane restrictions from 04:00 until 12:45. The inner lane will be reserved for cyclists, while the outer lanes are open to motorists. The speed limit will also be reduced to 60km/h with a stop-and-go set up at the R327 intersection. Traffic officers will regulate the off-ramps.
• There will be lane restrictions from Marsh Street to the N2 from 04:00 until 13:30. The inner lanes will be for cyclists, while the outer lanes will be open for motorists to use. The crossover points are Marsh Street, Schoeman and Da Gama streets, Melkhout and Mossel streets, Essenhout and Grunter streets, Mayixhale and Spekboom streets and Flora Road.
• Bakke Street to Marsh Street will be closed from 06:15 until 13:30, with a detour via Eiland Street, Alhof Drive and Da Gama Street. An alternative route is the N2 between Voorbaai and Hartenbos, and central Mossel Bay, Heiderand, KwaNonqaba and Dana Bay.
• George Road will be closed from between the Louis Fourie off-ramp to the Rudie Barnard Street turn-off, from 04:00 until 16:30. De Bakke residents can access the area via 6th Avenue and Marsh Street.
• Bland Street will be closed between Church Street and Beach Street from 04:00 until 16:30. Daley Street, Beacon Point and Huckle Street can be accessed via Beach Street,
• The westbound lane from Point to Kloof streets will be open.
• Munro Street will be closed from between George Road and the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex's lower gate, from 04:00 until 16:30.
• Station Street will also be closed from Church and Market to Bland streets, from 04:00 until 16:30.
• The Point will be closed from Kloof to Point streets between 08:00 and 16:30.
