Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS: The N2 has reopened to normal traffic this morning, 7 January at around 05:15 after being closed for several hours due to a large fire and ongoing firefighting operations in Aalwyndal, Island View, Vakansieplaas and surrounding areas.
The road was closed from 23:20 on Tuesday night between the Langeberg Mall off-ramp and Dana Bay, in the direction of Cape Town, due to heavy smoke and unsafe visibility conditions.
Robert Crous took this picture at Vakansieplaas on the morning of 7 January. Firefighters are still on the scene to monitor flare-ups.
Traffic was halted as a precaution to ensure public safety while emergency teams worked in the area.
Authorities confirm that the Joint Operations Centre remains activated to manage the incident and coordinate the joint response.
