MOSSEL BAY NEWS - One of the Mossel Bay Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit’s investigators, Warrant Officer Soretha van Zyl, was announced as the third best FCS employee (level 5-7) in the country at the SAPS National Excellence Awards in Bloemfontein on Monday, 26 January.
Van Zyl had won the award for the best FCS employee in the province at the Western Cape Excellence Awards on 17 January.
She had also been recognised as best FCS investigator in the province at the Western Cape’s FCS Awards in Worcester in December.
The case that earned her all these awards was the 2024 conviction of Siyabonga Kiewiet. On 3 August 2019, Kiewiet kidnapped a woman (28) and locked her in his room during the day, only to return at night and repeatedly rape and assault her.
The woman was rescued several days later, on 14 August, when her co-workers traced her to Kiewiet’s location, forced open the door and freed her.
In 2024, Kiewiet was sentenced to nine life terms and 41 years for multiple counts of rape, assault to cause grievous bodily harm, assault common and kidnapping.
