MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Mossel Bay was one of the stops on the 67 Blankets for Mandela national roadshow.
The local event took place in the Mossel Bay Town Hall on Saturday, 13 May.
PHOTO GALLERY: 500 blankets for the needy
The aim of the national project is to gather as many blankets as possible to distribute to the needy in South Africa prior to President Nelson Mandela's birthday.
The Mossel Bay event was attended by 67 Blankets national project founder Carolyn Steyn and Mandela's former personal assistant, Zelda la Grange as part of their roadshow.
The blankets from the Mossel Bay area were on show in the town hall.
Steyn, La Grange and Mossel Bay mayor Dirk Kotzé gave speeches, as did the local coordinator for Gift of the Givers, Mario Ferreira. Some of the blankets were handed to Gift of the Givers for distribution.
The blankets made locally will all be distributed to those in need in the Garden Route area.
Entertainment was provided by dancers, singers and musicians in the town hall. Blankets and scarves were handed to the dignitaries who attended.
The Eden KnitWits organised the knitting of blankets in the Mossel Bay area and the function at the town hall. More than 500 blankets were made in the Eden area for the project.
One of the highlights was a "fairytale blanket", knitted by Mirié Onraët. It has elements in it from seven different fairytales.
In an interview with Mossel Bay Advertiser Kotzé urged the public to support the Eden KnitWits by donating knitting yarn for making blankets for those in need. Contact Ria Potgieter (064 413 1808) of the Eden KnitWits if you are able to donate.
