MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Steve 'Lux' Nortier (41) the man who tragically died in a motor vehicle accident near Hartenbos Heuwels on 20 December, had been battling stage 4 cancer at the time of his death.
Nortier, who is from Paarl, had been in Hartenbos spending time with family for the festive season when the accident took place that Saturday near the intersection of the R328 and the N2.
Nortier's mother, Zeugnette Nortier told social media page 'Waar Brandit Inni Kaap' that she and her husband Braam had come across the crash that morning when they had gone out looking for Steve.
Zeugnette had told the page that Steve had slept for a few hours following a recent chemotherapy session. Upon waking, he left the house. Zeugnette said Braam called to ask where he had gone, and Steve replied he was going to a store.
She said after about 20 minutes, Braam called him again, but his phone was off. It is then that the pair decided to go out and look for their son and came across the accident scene.
Zeugnette described Steve as a traveller, having spent time in Namibia, Tanzania and Zambia. She said he enjoyed fishing, sailing, playing rugby and easily connected with others.
She added that the family was overwhelmed by the hundreds of kind messages they had received following Steve's death, and were deeply appreciative of each one.
"It makes one's heart proud... I don't think we realised how big an impact he had on individuals, from small children to the elderly," she said in a Facebook post.
"We have so many questions, things we will never understand, but we are grateful that you were our son, loaned to us for 41 years," said Zeugnette in her post.
According to a Facebook post by Steve on 18 December, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the lungs, pancreas, liver and lymph nodes in October 2024.
Nortier had lost his partner, Ammerie Heenop, to cancer earlier this year.
The Nortier family are well-known owners of the 7 Days Supermarket and Family Farmstall in Northern Paarl.
Steve's memorial service will take place on Tuesday 6 January at the Paarl Valley Dutch Reformed Church in Paarl, Cape Town.
