MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Eighteen local sports clubs received equipment from the Garden Route Casino Trust at a handover last week.
The casino trust held a handover ceremony on Thursday, 24 October at the Bravo Lounge at the casino.
The clubs which were donated equipment are affiliated to the Mossel Bay Sport Council (MBSC).
One of the key objectives of the MBSC, as per its constitution, is to “secure benefits for its members”.
A MBSC spokesperson said: "As seen at the recent Eden Sport Council (ESC) awards, the region has brilliant sport stars from various sporting codes.
"Sport can’t be played effectively without the minimum required equipment.
More people participate
"This donation of sporting equipment allows the clubs to have more people participate and level the playing field. It underpins the three core pillars of the National Sport and Recreation Plan (NSRP)."
The three pillars are:
• Creating an active nation with a strong participation base in communities.
• Creating a winning nation: improving international sport success. (Springboks winning the Rugby World Cup, medals at the Olympics.)
• Creating an enabling environment (playing field).
The chairman of the Mossel Bay Sport Council, Rustin Constance, said the core function of the clubs should not only be winning medals and trophies, but increasing participation.
'Sincere appreciation'
At the handover, Charmaine Prins, the secretary of the MBSC, said: “On behalf of our clubs, the Mossel Bay Sport Council members extend our most sincere appreciation to the Garden Route Casino Trust for its continuous support towards development of sport in and around our community.
"The equipment received will be a huge help in growing and developing young players and athletes. We hope this productive, long-term collaboration will grow from strength to strength.”
Aside from the handovers, Ansie Morrison received an accolade for her contributions to athletics and as a founding member as well as long serving member of the MBSC.
Sport clubs are encouraged to apply for membership to the MBSC, application forms can be obtained from the secretary via email mbaysc@gmail.com.
