MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Local athletes from more than 50 sports clubs affiliated with the Mossel Bay Sport Council (MBSC) gathered in the Bravo Lounge of the Garden Route Casino on Friday 22 August, for the annual Mossel Bay Sport Awards.
Athletes of all ages were recognised and celebrated for their sporting achievements. The sports that received recognition included rugby, boxing, bowls, athletics and dance amongst several others.
Winners of Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year were Jacobus Lodewikus (JL) van Rensburg and Esmé Kruger, respectively.
JL's brother, Walter van Rensburg, collected the award on his behalf.
Primary School Sportsman of the Year went to Tyroyd Arendse, a learner at Diaz Primary School while Isabeau Coetsee took home Primary School Sportswoman of the Year. Isabeau is a learner at Park Primary School.
Secondary School Sportswoman of the Year was awarded to Mieke Coetzee, with Zoë Vallentyn coming close as runner-up. Walter van Rensburg was the recipient of the Secondary School Sportsman of the Year award.
Other categories included Newcomer of the Year, Sportsman/Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability, Developing School Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sport Administrator of the Year, Sport Club/School of the Year, Sport Community Builder of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
Una Saayman, Fred Amsterdam, Peter Smith, Hannelie Coetzer, Hannetjie Fourie, Ferdie Nel and Daniël Swart all received Lifetime Achievement Awards at the event.
Also in attendance were members of the Mossel Bay Municipality, including Mayor Dirk Kotzé, Municipal Manager Colin Puren, Councillor Donovan Claassen, Alderman Niklaas Booysen and Speaker Venolea Fortuin, as well as representatives of the MBSC Committee, Garden Route Casino Trust and Eden Sport Council.
Garden Route District Municipality Mayor Andrew Stroebel also made an appearance, congratulating each winner.
