MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality has said crews from its Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services are continuing firefighting efforts at a vegetation fire near the railway line between Hartenbos and Little Brak River today, 4 January.
The municipality said the fire broke out on the afternoon of 3 January and that firefighting operations have been hampered by inaccessible terrain.
"By the evening of 3 January, firefighters were working at the head of the fire to extinguish flames while other teams focused on hotspots," it said.
"Overnight into 4 January, crews continued monitoring the fire. It was reported that there was no safe vehicle access to the fire line," said the municipality.
It said efforts were made to secure the blaze along Hartland’s northern boundary, however the terrain remains difficult to navigate.
"Winds have further complicated suppression efforts. As of the morning of 4 January, the head of the fire was located near the north-eastern side of the Hartland fence, with flames still burning on the southern side above the railway line."
It said firefighting crews remain at the scene.
