MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Funisile Pantshi (39) was recently sentenced to 10 years' direct imprisonment after he was found guilty of the 2023 murder of Sinethemba April (33).
April was walking home with his girlfriend from a tavern in KwaNonqaba at about 22:00 on 11 November when they were approached by Pantshi, the girlfriend's ex-boyfriend.
A scuffle broke out. April was stabbed in the chest and wrist. He was rushed to hospital where he was later declared dead from his injuries.
The KwaNonqaba Police Station's spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, said the sentencing is the handiwork of the dedicated investigating officer, Sergeant Malungisa Kakaza.
Kakaza had also helped secure another conviction, that of a 23-year-old man who was found guilty of robbing a person at knifepoint last year.
On 1 October, Lihle Makhalima was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment, four of which are suspended for the next five years provided he is not convicted of robbery or attempted robbery during this period.
It was also ruled that Makhalima was unfit to possess a firearm.
Kapp said these recent sentences that Ka-kaza helped secure were a testament to his commitment to serving and protecting the community, and that the station's management commended him.
