MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Residents of Bay View, Mossel Bay, helped extinguish a house fire in Hannes Pienaar Street in the suburb on Tuesday, 24 June.
Hannelie Marais, who is the secretary of the Da Gamaskop Community Policing Forum and a member of the Bay View Neighbourhood Watch, received a message about a house on fire on the neighbourhood watch WhatsApp group.
There was a call to residents to come out with fire extinguishers and hose pipes, to try to put out the flames.
Marais said the smoke was thick when she arrived at the scene, but fortunately other residents also arrived, with fire extinguishers, and began extinguishing the blaze.
Mossel Bay Municipality stated that its Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services received a call about the fire at about 09:40.
The municipality said that when the fire services arrived, the fire was already extinguished, but the contents of the bedroom which had been ablaze, were still smouldering.

"Fire crews removed the smouldering mattresses and damped the area down. There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is presumed to have been an electrical appliance that overheated," noted the municipality.
"The area was made safe and left in the care of the owners."
