Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The branch manager of the Mossel Bay SPCA, Elize Goosen, and her inspectorate team were recently chased away by members of the community, while attempting to embark on the first step to catch and relocate the domestic geese that are ruffling so many feathers in Great Brak.
This is according to a statement from the SPCA, yesterday, Thursday 9 November.
Mossel Bay Advertiser reported on the incident a week ago. Some residents were up in arms over the fact that the organisation had attempted to remove the geese.
It was at the request of the municipality, however.
"Responding to the request from the municipality for the relocation of the geese, our small team was shocked and disappointed to have been treated the way it was," the SPCA said in its statement.
"However, we have chosen to see the situation differently. It is with pride and gratefulness that we celebrate that our community is so passionate about these creatures, as well as the environment in which they live."
The organisation said the incident had given its team an opportunity to really appreciate the residents in the Mossel Bay area for their compassion and care. "We have a renewed hope in humanity."
The municipality confirmed to the Advertiser that it will re-engage with the community regarding the future of the geese in the new year.
The SPCA statement noted: "In the interim, we assure our community that whatever decision is made by the municipality regarding the future of the geese, the SPCA will ensure the geese are treated with the kindness they deserve.
"Due to a few threats made on social media from some community members regarding, 'taking matters into their own hands', we request that the community keep a close eye on our gaggle of geese. The SPCA will not hesitate to prosecute those who intentionally harm any animals in our community.
"So we say thank you for chasing us, and thank you for standing up for the rights of animals. Together we can achieve so much more."
