MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Hillcrest Secondary School in Mossel Bay recently received an award from the Western Cape Education Department for its greatly improved matric pass rate.
Headmaster Ivan Kroneberg received the award at Leewenhof on 16 January on behalf of the school. Learners from Hillcrest have gone from strength to strength following a pass rate in 2017 of 68.7%.
Since then, the school has had a pass rate in 2018 of 73.4% and last year, a pass rate of 84.3%.
Kroneberg says they have achieved this despite many challenges.
"Our learners faced many challenges after two of our grade 12 teachers left. Another teacher was sick for a whole term and we also had to deal with the trauma of the murder of one of our learners on the school premises."
Kroneberg says despite this, the learners pulled through and made him proud. Dux matric at Hillcrest in 2019, Callin Francis, also received an award for his overall percentage of 78.6%.
"I am proud of Callin and proud of the teachers and learners at Hillcrest. This is indeed a proud moment in the history of our school and an important step towards our quest in creating a school of excellence."
