GEORGE NEWS - George is buzzing with excitement after the official launch of the George Festival 2025 at the George Museum on Friday, 14 November.
What began as the brainchild of Melissa Dreyer, Mayor Jackie von Brandis' public relations officer, has grown into one of the region's most anticipated celebrations of culture, arts and sport.
Dreyer said the idea began almost by accident. "It was actually quite unusual, and to be honest, I was just thinking out loud. A large part of my duties involves travelling with the executive mayor, which allows me to see different parts of our municipality. Everywhere we went, I kept noticing spots with tremendous potential that have remained largely untapped."
She explained that after considering it for some time, she approached the mayor and suggested doing something big and out of the ordinary for George. "The mayor looked at me and said: 'OK, put something together, then.' That was where the concept started."

This eventually led to discussions with the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, the development of a formal proposal and many collaborative adjustments that shaped the festival into its current form. Dreyer admitted she never expected anyone to take her initial idea seriously.
This year's theme reflects the spirit of the event: Culture. Art. Sport. Our community. Our celebration.
Von Brandis described the festival as a true reflection of George and its people.
Mackenzie encouraged residents to embrace the festival, calling it an investment in people, creativity and community.
The launch also highlighted one of this year's standout events, the Louis Massyn 5km and 10km Fun Run. Named after the marathon legend who recently completed his 50th Comrades Marathon at 74, the event honours his remarkable endurance and contribution to local sport.
