MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) is a charity which does much-needed work in communities, looking after pets whose owners have limited funds to pay for their treatment.
It is described as a welfare animal organisation which offers a veterinary service to people who cannot afford private vets.
In the greater Mossel Bay area, the PDSA mobile clinic goes to parts of Mossel Bay as well as areas such as Brandwag, Friemersheim, Little Brak and Great Brak.
Treatment
It is parked at certain spots and people arrive with their pets at the clinic for treatment.
The clinic does not go from house to house. It offers treatment for sick or hurt animals, vaccinations, deworming and dipping.
The clinic is in Mossel Bay on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Monday it is here for a full day and on Wednesdays and Fridays, in the afternoon.
On a Wednesday morning the mobile clinic visits other towns surrounding Mossel Bay.
The mobile clinic spends a half hour or three quarters of an hour in each spot.
George branch
It is the George branch of the PDSA which serves the Mossel Bay area.
The head office of the PDSA is in Cape Town and it has an animal hospital in Cape Town, as well as a smaller, satellite hospital in Mitchell's Plain.
There is another hospital and clinic in Soweto. The PDSA mobile clinic. The PDSA, which is an NPO, does not receive any government subsidy.
Relies on donations
It relies on donations and contributions from the public and people leave money for it in their wills. Moira Gibbs, administrator for the George branch, noted: "We are always needing funds. Donations help fund treatment for animals whose owners can't afford to pay for treatment."
She pointed out: "It's not totally free. For vaccinations and deworming, there is a price.
"For the treatment of a sick animal, we need so many millilitres of an injection and if pet owners don't have money, we do that for free."
She noted that pet owners who were able to, paid a minimum fee. If you would like to support the PDSA in any way, email the George office (pdsagrj@mweb. co.za) or call 044 875 8300 or 082 296 5051.
